Associate Deans


Vicki GrassianExecutive Associate Dean

Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Vicki Grassian

Reporting to the dean, as executive associate dean Grassian provides a cohesive, comprehensive and strategic role in the development and growth of the division. She provides day-to-day mentorship and oversight of the associate deans, as well as works in close partnership with the associate deans in overseeing strategic initiatives across the division and institution. Grassian assists the dean in the development and implementation of strategic plans to expand the scope, scale and impact of the division’s educational, research and service missions, and will lead special projects in coordination with the dean.

Key responsibilities:

  • Identify specific divisional/departmental opportunities and works with associate deans to develop plans for implementation
  • Identify specific divisional/departmental challenges and works with associate deans to develop plans for resolution
  • Integrate and coordinate efforts of associate deans with divisional initiatives as well with development, communications, and alumni relations as appropriate/necessary
  • Develop quarterly timelines for action items and track completion (based on above)
  • Develop administrative support structure with dean and assistant dean to support associate deans
  • Serve as co-Faculty Equity Advisor (FEA) for the division



Peter Ebenfelt

Associate Dean for Research

Professor of Mathematics Peter Ebenfelt

Reporting to the dean and working closely with the executive associate dean and the other associate deans, Ebenfelt is responsible for the identification of new research opportunities at the division level, helping oversee and advise on the division’s facilities and infrastructure, the building of research partnerships both domestically and abroad and the identification of faculty recruiting targets and extramural resources for these efforts. The associate dean oversees strategic initiatives across the division and institution, leads special projects as assigned by the dean and assists the dean in the development of strategic plans to expand the scope, scale and impact of the division’s research mission. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Create a structure for understanding current research strengths and developing/supporting new and growing research areas
  • Identify areas for integration with division’s development initiatives/strategic plans
  • Facilitate integration with division’s corporate/alumni engagement efforts
  • Provide advice and guidance on academic personnel matters, review and provide the Dean’s recommendation letter for academic personnel files.



Alison Coil

Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Professor of Physics Alison Coil

Reporting to the dean and working closely with the executive associate dean and the other associate deans, Coil is responsible for ensuring that the division’s mission of research, teaching and service are imbued with the values of diversity, equity and inclusion (EDI) such that the division will cultivate a welcoming, diverse, equitable and inclusive climate among students, staff and faculty. Coil makes broad-reaching decisions and recommendations to the dean regarding the division’s engagement in the area EDI and overall strategic direction. Coil oversees strategic initiatives across the division and institution, leads special projects as assigned by the dean and assists the dean in the development of strategic plans to expand the scope, scale and impact of the division’s commitment to inclusive excellence. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Cultivate a culture of inclusion within the division for students, faculty and staff
  • Ensure that university policies concerning diversity, equity and inclusion are implemented properly by the departments
  • Work closely with associate dean for education and students in the development of programs for student success/inclusion
  • Serve as co-Faculty Equity Advisor (FEA) for the division
  • Provide advice and guidance on academic personnel matters, review and provide the dean’s recommendation letter for academic personnel files.

Professor of XXX

Reporting to the dean and working closely with the executive associate dean and the other associate deans, XXX is responsible for supporting the academic mission of the division in service to its undergraduate and graduate students. This role evaluates existing educational programs and identifies areas of needed growth and opportunity. XXX oversees strategic initiatives across the division and institution, leads special projects as assigned by the dean and assists the dean in the development of strategic plans to expand the scope, scale and impact of the division’s educational programs and support structures for students.

Key responsibilities:

  • Identify challenges faced by departments in dealing with growth of student numbers and propose potential paths toward resolution
  • Work closely with divisional staff charged with developing internship and employment opportunities for students
  • Open an active dialogue with departments and industry partners related to the creation of professional masters programs
  • Work closely with associate dean for EDI in the development of programs for student success/inclusion
  • Provide advice and guidance on academic personnel matters, and review and provide the dean’s recommendation letter for academic personnel files
