Awards:

  • 35th Lewis S. Rosenstiel Award (2006)
Roger Tsien was chosen by a committee of distinguished scientists for his pioneering invention of molecular probes that allow cell biologists to measure and control calcium, cAMP, and nitric oxide in cells. The award consists of a medal and an equal share of a $10,000 cash prize. His co-recipient is Dr. Martin Chalfie of Biological Sciences, Columbia University.
  • Fifth Annual Perl-UNC Neuroscience Prize (2005)
The $10,000 prize, presented to Tsien April 13, 2005 on the UNC campus, was given to recognize a seminal achievement in neuroscience. Tsien was cited by the committee that selected him for his development of molecular indicators that have revolutionized the optical monitoring of neurons. Tsien will give a lecture immediately following the ceremony.
Edward R. Perl, for whom the prize is named, is a professor of cell and molecular physiology at UNC’s School of Medicine.
  • UCSD Chancellor's Associates Faculty Award for Excellence in Research in Science and Engineering (2003-04)
For his varied and continued success as an unparalleled research scientist and innovator.
  • Wolf Prize in Medicine (2004)
For his "seminal contribution to the design and biological application of novel fluorescent and photolabile molecules to analyze and perturb cell signal transduction."

The prize, in the amount of $100,000, is shared with Robert A. Weinberg of MIT.

  • Annual Porter Lecturer, American Society for Cell Biology (2003)
Named for a pioneer of electron microscopy who was one of the founders of the ASCB, the Porter Lecture is a scientific highpoint in the Society's Annual Meeting, widely considered the largest and most influential gathering of biology researchers in the world.
  • Heineken Prize for Biochemistry (2002)

  • ACS Award for Creative Invention (2002) Roger Y. Tsien has made extraordinary and unique contributions to biochemical research by developing an array of methods and techniques to study and manipulate cellular signaling. His major contributions include the invention of fluorescent reporters that make it possible to image calcium ions, protein complexes, and other signaling species in living cells and tissues. He has used organic synthesis and protein engineering in creative ways to produce these new reagents. Tsien has been a named inventor on more than four dozen US patents, and is extending his cellular signaling work today to develop new methods to study gene transcription and expression in living organisms.
