Awards:
  • The Royal Astronomical Society in England has awarded the society's Gold Medal, its highest honor, for contributions to astronomy during more than half a century.

  • 2007 National Academy of Sciences' Award for Scientific Reviewing
Physics Professor Geoffrey R. Burbidge has won the National Academy of Sciences' Award for Scientific Reviewing. The $10,000 prize is awarded annually for excellence in scientific reviewing within the past 10 years. Burbidge was cited "for contributions as editor of The Annual Review of Astronomy from 1974 to 2004, using his vast knowledge to make it the premier astronomy review journal worldwide."  He is one of 18 individuals who will be honored by the academy with awards at the academy's April meeting in Washington. Burbidge's award is supported by Annual Reviews Inc., the Institute for Scientific Information and The Scientist in honor of J. Murray Luck and has been presented since 1979.

Awards:

  • Barrett Award (2007)

Sunil K. Sinha, professor of physics, has been selected to receive the 2007 Barrett Award by the Denver X-ray Conference Advisory Committee.  The Barrett Award recognizes “outstanding contributions to the field of powder diffraction.”

The award will be presented on August 1 at the 2007 Denver X-ray conference.  Sinha is only the twelfth person to receive the award, which is presented biennially.  It consists of $1,000 and a recognition plaque.

Sinha’s research involves examining the structure and dynamics of polymer films and other novel liquids using X-ray and neutron scattering.  He also studies novel magnetic and superconducting materials to understand how their chemical structure affects their magnetic and transport properties.

J. Andrew McCammon, Professor
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Awards:
  • American Chemical Society Award for Computers in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research (2008)

The award recognizes and encourages “the use of computers in the advancement of the chemical and biological sciences.”
The award consists of $5,000, a certificate and reimbursement for travel to the 235th American Chemical Society meeting in New Orleans.  The award will be presented on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at the Awards Ceremony in conjunction with the ACS meeting.
McCammon uses supercomputers and sophisticated computer graphics systems to model the dynamics of protein molecules in solution.  These models reveal how proteins bind to each other and how enzymes catalyze reactions.  The resulting information about protein interactions can be applied to the genetic engineering of enzymes or the design of new drugs that bind to and modify protein interactions.
