UC San Diego Professor Wins Wolf Prize in Chemistry

Message from Dean Mark Thiemens

This year brings two important milestones for faculty and staff in our division — the 65th anniversary of the first sustained nuclear chain reaction at the University of Chicago and the 50th anniversary of a high school mathematics competition that now takes place each spring
at UCSD.

Three members of our emeritus faculty — chemist James Arnold and physicists Marvin Goldberger and Herbert York—played key roles in the success of that first event, the Manhattan Project, which brought a rapid end to World War II and increased the influence of scientists within the highest levels of our government.

Professors Goldberger and York will share their personal recollections of the physicists involved in the Manhattan Project who shaped American physics and science policy during the post-War years at a special event on May 17 at 4:30 pm at the La Jolla Playhouse’s Potiker Theatre on the UCSD campus. I hope you will attend. Details on the lecture can be found here >>

Finally, on May 1, UCSD, in conjunction with the Greater San Diego
Math Council and the San Diego County Office of Education, will celebrate the winners of the 50th Annual High School Honors Mathematics Contest at UCSD with an awards banquet. Details about this contest and celebration can be found here >>. Check out the Science & Math Education Program's website and find out how you can donate to this exciting new enterprise by clicking here >>

Bottleneck in Blood Supply Makes Brain Vulnerable to Strokes
A team of physicists and neuroscientists has discovered a bottleneck in the network of blood vessels in the brain that makes it vulnerable to strokes. The finding may explain the origin of the puzzling damage to the brain's gray matter often detected in brain scans, especially among the elderly.

Annual Giving Phone Campaign Begins in April
UC San Diego students will be calling alumni and friends to consider making a contribution to the Physical Sciences Annual Fund. The students truly believe in the betterment of UCSD and you will hear that in their voices. This fund makes possible activities like the Dean's Awards for Undergraduate Excellence and also makes possible the Alumni and Friends E-newsletter.

Thank you for your support of the Division of Physical Sciences and the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. Do not be surprised if the Dean says hello to alumni and friends that make a pledge during the call campaign, as he will be there to personally thank the student callers for their hard work.

Gifts can also be made safely and securely online to the Division of Physical Sciences by clicking here.
