: Duffs’ Impact Lives of Students in Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
by Carolyn L. Ebrahimi

Dr. Russell and Mrs. Eloise Duff
T o Russell Duff, Ph. D., and his wife Eloise, science and education have always been important. The Duffs demonstrated their commitment to science education this year through a gift of $20,000 to support student research in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Dr. Duff is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board.
Thankfully for UCSD, the Duffs have dedicated much of their time to the university. They also support fellowships in the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), and are Friends of the Library, as well as members of E. W. Scripps Associates and the Dean’s Roundtable at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies.
They subscribe to Art Power presentations and to the season productions of the Department of Theater and Dance. They are life members of Chancellor’s Associates and both have been members of the Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Awards Committee. “With our involvement with Chancellor’s Associates we are kept up to date on the variety of cultural activities and items of research interest at the university,” explains Russ Duff.
“With our involvement with Chancellor’s Associates we are kept up to date on the variety of cultural activities and items of research interest at the university,” explains Russ Duff.
Russ Duff's thesis work was of an interdisciplinary nature. That, followed by 15 years working for the University of California's National laboratories, made his interest in UCSD with its interdisciplinary approach to education a natural place for the Duff's to focus their charity when they retired. “Because of the remarkable student body here, we consider it a privilege to support individual students and the university in more general ways," says Russ Duff. "Watching the growth of the university and its important contributions to new, vital scientific research in the United States, makes giving of our time and money meaningful. We hope others in the community feel the same way.”
