From sub-atomic to astronomic scales, we are working on the frontiers of science. Our research ranges from theoretical to experimental to practical. In the fiscal year 2010-2011, physical sciences research expenditures totaled $68 million.
A tradition of bridging disciplinary boundaries long before interdisciplinary research became fashionable has allowed us to probe fundamental questions at the intersection of disciplines and to create new fields of science. Faculty in the physical sciences have pioneered fields such as cosmochemistry, biophysics and metamaterials.
Researchers have access to shared core facilities that provide services from instrumentation to advanced analysis and imaging. Faculty have organized a variety of centers and institutes to promote collaboration, both locally and internationally, among scientists with shared interests and complementary expertise. Our penchant for innovation has enabled many current and former faculty to start companies that played a central role in the development of San Diego’s technology-based economy.
