group photo of transfer studentsThe Transfer Research Experience (T-REx) offers incoming transfer students a 4-week program in the summer before their first enrolled quarter (Fall 2025) where students work in a research group in the Departments of Astronomy & Astrophysics, Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics side-by-side with other undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs.

You can read more about the program in this UC San Diego Today story.

Program Overview

This summer research opportunity requires a commitment of about 10 hours per week, for four weeks (August  – September) on campus for activities including working in a laboratory or computational research environment, performing experiments, participating in instrumentation facility tours, attending research group meetings, and networking with researchers at all levels of experience.

To support students during the Transfer Research Experience, the School of Physical Sciences offers a $1,000 stipend for each participant. Housing and transportation are not provided.

In this program, you will participate in:

Research Lab Placement & Mentorship: You will be matched with a faculty mentor in a lab who will guide you through your four-week research experience.
